sustainability

Bakker Logistiek has an extensive sustainability programme with concrete objectives and measures: Bakker Green. In recent years, the first successful steps were taken. Now we are working on realising our objectives for 2020.

Bakker Logistiek wants to be the leader in sustainable logistics. For this reason, we have ambitious objectives in the field of CO2 and energy:

Period Reduction
2005 - 2020 > 50% less CO2
2005 - 2020 > 30% less energy consumption

Three themes

Bakker Green comprises three themes:

Green transport

We want to reduce our fuel consumption/CO2 emissions and conserve our fuel.

Green warehouse

In the scope of the stock intake, storage and release of the products of our customers, we want to reduce the wastage of energy/packaging material and make our fuel consumption more sustainable.
Green Organisation

Sustainability is key to our way of working. Staff are also then crucial for the realisation of our sustainability objectives. Moreover, our staff must themselves also have a pleasant, sustainable working environment. Our whole operation is geared to sustainability.

Where possible, we choose solutions that are better for the environment. Within our company, but also in our cooperation with our suppliers and customers.

We make it easier for our customers to make their logistics more sustainable. In this way, we contribute at the same time to realising the sustainability objectives of our customers, our society and ourselves.

For example, we try to bundle the transport and prevent driving ‘empty’ kilometres as much as possible. With continuous process improvements, we increase our efficiency and combat wastage. In addition, we implement technical improvements in, for example, our lorries. In 2010/beginning of 2011, we started using 99 new lorries with clean EEV engines. In June and July 2011, there followed another 15 clean combis. By the summer of 2011, 60% of our lorries had Euro 5 or EEV engines. The green lorries – along with Eco-driving training for drivers and monthly tyre checks – reduced energy consumption and CO2 emissions.

Other examples of recent sustainability initiatives are:

  • The purchase in 2011 of Ecocombis (also known as Langere en Zwaardere Vrachtautocombinaties (LZV) (Longer and Heavier Vehicle Combinations (LHVs))), Double Deck (two floors with containers) and 15 combis mean that we can transport more freight per trip and more stealthily.
  • Our new generation of onboard computers makes real-time monitoring of the vehicles possible, so that we can optimally plan and execute return trips.
  • We are working on a programme to make our staff more aware and to stimulate them to act sustainably in the execution of their day-to-day duties.
  • Besides reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions, we are looking into the prospect of using green energy and into the possibilities for compensation (for our three sustainability themes Green Transport, Green Warehouse and Green Organisation).

In addition, we are participating in two large projects that promote sustainable logistics: Green Order/Lean and Green and 4C4More.
